1955 Topps All-American #56 Ernie Nevers
Rookie card Nevers was the second football player ever to have his jersey number retired. ( Red Grange was the first.) Stanford retired Nevers's number , 1, in 1926.
About Ernie Nevers
Ernie Nevers was the complete fullback of the 1920s, the Stanford star Pop Warner called “the football player without a fault” and compared favorably to Jim Thorpe. A consensus All-American in 1925, he had already delivered his signature performance in the January 1925 Rose Bowl, playing all 60 minutes on ankles broken earlier that season and pounding out 114 yards against Notre Dame's Four Horsemen. Stanford retired his No. 1, which stood alone as the school's only retired number for over half a century. Turning pro in 1926, Nevers carried the barnstorming Duluth Eskimos through a 29-game cross-country season, then starred for the Chicago Cardinals, scoring all 40 of his team's points against the Bears on November 28, 1929, six touchdowns and four extra points, an NFL single-game record that still stands. All-NFL in each of his five seasons, he entered the College Football Hall of Fame with its first class in 1951 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a 1963 charter member.
