About Hugh Gallarneau

Hugh 'Duke' Gallarneau starred for one of college football's great turnaround teams. Stanford had gone 1-7-1 in 1939; a year later, with new coach Clark Shaughnessy unveiling the modern T formation, the 1940 'Wow Boys' ran the table at 10-0 with Gallarneau at halfback as co-captain and an All-America pick. He capped the season with two touchdowns — a 10-yard run and a 40-yard catch — in the 21-13 Rose Bowl win over Nebraska. The Chicago Bears drafted him in the third round, and he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns as a rookie on the 1941 championship team. He then joined the Marine Corps, serving through seven island invasions in the Pacific, earning a Bronze Star and rising to major, before returning to the Bears from 1945 to 1947 and winning another title in 1946. Later a longtime Chicago retail executive, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1982.
