About Angelo Bertelli
Angelo Bertelli, the 'Springfield Rifle,' gave Notre Dame its first Heisman Trophy. A single-wing tailback who finished second in the 1941 Heisman voting as a sophomore, he moved to quarterback when Frank Leahy installed the T formation and became, in Grantland Rice's phrase, the 'T-formation magician.' In 1943 the Irish averaged 43 points through their first six games while Bertelli completed 25 of 36 passes for 512 yards and 10 touchdowns; then the Marine Corps called him to duty, and news of his Heisman victory reached him in boot camp at Parris Island. Notre Dame rolled on to the national championship without him. Bertelli served as a Marine officer at Iwo Jima and Guam, then played three AAFC seasons with the Los Angeles Dons and Chicago Rockets before knee injuries ended his career. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1972, he later ran businesses in New Jersey until his death in 1999.
