About John Lujack
John Lujack quarterbacked Notre Dame to three national championships, taking over as a sophomore in 1943 when Angelo Bertelli left for the Marines, then returning from nearly three years of Navy service to lead unbeaten Irish teams in 1946 and 1947. A unanimous All-American both seasons, he won the 1947 Heisman Trophy after passing for 777 yards and directing a 9-0 campaign under Frank Leahy. His most famous play came on defense: in the 1946 scoreless tie with top-ranked Army, his open-field tackle of Doc Blanchard preserved the 0-0 final. Notre Dame's first four-sport letterman since 1912, Lujack played four seasons with the Chicago Bears, throwing for a then-record 468 yards in a 1949 game and reaching two Pro Bowls. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1960 and died in 2023 at age 98, then the oldest living Heisman winner.
