1955 Topps All-American #51 Duane Purvis

About Duane Purvis
Duane Purvis was one of the great all-around athletes of Purdue's early years, starring at halfback and fullback for the Boilermakers from 1932 through 1934. A consensus All-American in 1933 and a first-team pick again in 1934, he averaged five yards a carry as a senior, broke touchdown runs of 80 and 73 yards, and piled up 1,802 career rushing yards, a Purdue record that stood for more than three decades. Purvis was every bit as dominant with a javelin, winning NCAA championships in 1933 and 1934, earning All-America honors three times in track, and at one point ranking third in the world in the event; the Associated Press named him the Big Ten's top athlete in 1933. He passed on pro football, later taught in Purdue's physical education department, and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
