About Ken Kavanaugh
Ken Kavanaugh made the forward pass a weapon in an era when most offenses kept the ball on the ground. A 6-foot-3 end at LSU from 1937 through 1939, he led the nation with 30 catches for 467 yards as a senior, earned consensus All-America honors, shared Southeastern Conference most-valuable-player recognition and won the Knute Rockne Memorial Trophy as the country's outstanding lineman while finishing seventh in the Heisman voting. With the Chicago Bears he became one of pro football's first great deep threats, hauling in 50 touchdown catches, a franchise record that still stands, and winning NFL championships in 1940, 1941 and 1946. Between those titles Kavanaugh flew 30 bombing missions over Europe with the Eighth Air Force, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
