About Gaynell Tinsley

Gaynell "Gus" Tinsley was a two-way force at end for LSU from 1934 to 1936, earning consensus All-America honors in both 1935 and 1936 while the Tigers captured their first two SEC championships and reached back-to-back Sugar Bowls. With halfback Abe Mickal he formed one of the South's great passing combinations, connecting on a 65-yard play against SMU that stood for years as the longest pass in Southern football history. Turning pro with the Chicago Cardinals, Tinsley led the NFL with 675 receiving yards in 1937 and tied the league record with 41 catches in 1938, earning All-NFL honors both seasons. He came home to coach his alma mater from 1948 through 1954, taking the 1949 Tigers to the Sugar Bowl and becoming the first man to appear in that game as both player and head coach. The College Football Hall of Fame welcomed him in 1956.
