1955 Topps All-American #16 Knute Rockne
About Knute Rockne
Knute Rockne, born in Voss, Norway, grew up in Chicago and became the most famous coach American football has produced. As a Notre Dame end he teamed with quarterback Gus Dorais in the 1913 victory over Army at West Point, the first major game in which a team used the forward pass as a regular weapon. Taking over as head coach in 1918, Rockne went 105-12-5 through 1930, and his .881 winning percentage still stands as the best in major-college history. His teams produced five undefeated, untied seasons and consensus national championships in 1924, 1929, and 1930; he coached George Gipp and the Four Horsemen, and the 1924 squad finished its perfect year by beating Stanford in the Rose Bowl. Rockne died in a Kansas plane crash on March 31, 1931, mourned across the country, and entered the College Football Hall of Fame with its charter class in 1951.
