About Bowden Wyatt

Bowden Wyatt stands in the College Football Hall of Fame twice, elected as a player in 1972 and as a coach in 1997 — only Amos Alonzo Stagg and Bobby Dodd preceded him in earning both honors. An end at Tennessee from 1936 to 1938, Wyatt captained the 1938 Volunteers through an 11-0 season and a victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, Tennessee's first bowl game, earning consensus All-America honors that fall. Coaching became his life's work. He took Wyoming to a 10-0 record and a Gator Bowl win in 1950, won the Southwest Conference at Arkansas in 1954, and came home to his alma mater in 1955; a year later Tennessee went 10-1, claimed the SEC championship, and Wyatt was named national Coach of the Year. His teams went 99-56-5 across sixteen seasons. He died of pneumonia in 1969 at just 51.
