About Gene McEver
Gene McEver, Tennessee's 'Wild Bull,' was the battering halfback who powered Bob Neyland's first great teams in Knoxville. As a sophomore in 1928 he returned a kickoff 98 yards against Alabama, the winning play in a 15-13 victory that announced Tennessee as a Southern power. In 1929 he led the nation in scoring with 130 points — a school single-season record that stood until 2024 — and earned consensus All-America honors. A knee injury wiped out his 1930 season, yet he came back to earn All-America mention again in 1931. Tennessee never lost a game in his three varsity years, going 27-0-3, the only blemishes three ties with Kentucky. After graduation McEver turned to coaching, leading Davidson as head coach from 1936 to 1943, and in 1954 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
