About Beattie Feathers
Beattie Feathers gave Robert Neyland's Tennessee teams their breakaway threat, starring at halfback from 1931 through 1933 while the Volunteers went 25-3-2. He scored 32 touchdowns in 30 games, rushed for 1,888 career yards that stood as the school record for 37 years, and doubled as a superb punter. In 1933 he was a consensus All-American and the Southeastern Conference's most valuable player. As a Chicago Bears rookie in 1934 he became the first man in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, finishing with 1,004 at a record 8.4 yards per carry, and he played through 1940 with the Bears, Brooklyn, and Green Bay. Feathers then settled into a long coaching career, leading North Carolina State from 1944 to 1951 and spending years as an assistant at Texas Tech and Wake Forest. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.
