About Don Whitmire

Don Whitmire was that rare lineman who dominated for two different schools. A squat, powerful 215-pound tackle, he starred at Alabama in 1941 and 1942, earning All-America mention there, before wartime service carried him to Annapolis. At Navy he was a consensus All-American in 1943 and a unanimous choice in 1944, when the Washington Touchdown Club awarded him the Rockne Trophy as the nation's outstanding lineman, and he served as brigade commander, the highest rank a midshipman can hold. Whitmire made the Navy his life's work and rose to rear admiral, and in April 1975 he directed the task force that carried out the evacuation of Saigon, an operation he described as the biggest in history, with some 82,000 men, women, and children brought to safety. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 1956.
