About Fats Henry

Wilbur "Fats" Henry looked round and slow and was neither, which made him one of early football's most feared linemen. At Washington & Jefferson he was a three-time All-America tackle, a first-team pick in 1917 and a consensus choice in 1918 and 1919, with a special gift for blocking punts. On the day the NFL was organized in 1920 he signed with the Canton Bulldogs, and the 245-pounder anchored their 1922 and 1923 NFL championship teams as a sixty-minute tackle who also punted and drop-kicked field goals; his 94-yard punt in 1923 set an NFL record. He finished with Pottsville and the New York Giants, then returned to Washington & Jefferson as athletic director from 1932 until his death in 1952. Henry was in the College Football Hall of Fame's inaugural 1951 class and joined Canton's charter class when the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in 1963.
