About Tom Hamilton

Tom Hamilton played halfback at Navy from 1924 to 1926 and was the drop-kicking star of the Academy's greatest team, the 1926 Midshipmen, who went 9-0-1 and claimed a national championship. In that season's fabled 21-21 tie with Army, remembered as one of the greatest games ever played, Hamilton drove Navy to its final touchdown and drop-kicked the tying extra point with thirty seconds left; he also led the nation with six drop-kicked field goals that fall and earned first-team All-America honors. Football was only the beginning of a remarkable Navy life. Hamilton returned as the Academy's head coach in 1934 through 1936 and again after the war, founded the V-5 preflight program that trained wartime aviators, served aboard the carrier Enterprise in the Pacific, and rose to rear admiral. He later became athletic director at Pittsburgh, then spent 1959 to 1971 as commissioner of the conference that grew into the Pac-8. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 1965.
