About Turk Edwards

Albert Glen 'Turk' Edwards, a 255-pound tackle, was the cornerstone of Washington State's finest era, starring from 1929 through 1931 on teams that went 25-7. He anchored the unbeaten 1930 squad that earned a Rose Bowl trip, and that season he and Mel Hein became the first All-Americans in school history. Turning pro, Edwards accepted the best of three NFL offers from the brand-new Boston Braves, the franchise that became the Redskins, and won all-league honors in every season but his last while helping Washington claim the 1937 NFL championship. His career ended in 1940 in singular fashion: after the pregame coin toss against the Giants, his cleats caught in the turf and his knee gave way. Edwards stayed with the club as an assistant and later served as Redskins head coach. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975.
