About Whizzer White
Byron 'Whizzer' White made Colorado football front-page news in 1937, a consensus All-American halfback who led the nation in scoring, rushing, and total offense while carrying the Buffaloes through an unbeaten regular season and into the Cotton Bowl. He finished second in that year's Heisman voting and won a Rhodes Scholarship, then put Oxford on hold long enough to lead the NFL in rushing as a Pittsburgh rookie in 1938; he did it again for Detroit in 1940 while attending law school on the side. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. The law eventually won out for good: White graduated first in his class at Yale Law School, and in 1962 he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served as an Associate Justice for thirty-one years, retiring in 1993.
