1955 Topps All-American #20 Sammy Baugh

About Sammy Baugh
Sammy Baugh picked up the "Slingin' Sammy" nickname from a Texas sportswriter, and at TCU from 1934 to 1936 he showed the whole country why, throwing for 39 touchdowns across three varsity seasons in an era when ten passes a game was considered daring. An All-American in 1935 and a consensus choice in 1936, he won a 3-2 Sugar Bowl duel with LSU, punting fourteen times with a 48-yard average, then closed his college career as MVP of a 16-6 Cotton Bowl win over Marquette. With the Washington Redskins from 1937 to 1952 he made the forward pass a primary weapon, winning NFL championships in 1937 and 1942, claiming six league passing titles, and leading the NFL in passing, punting, and interceptions in 1943 alone. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame's inaugural class of 1951 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame's charter class of 1963, Baugh spent his later years ranching in Texas.
