1955 Topps All-American #19 Bruce Smith
About Bruce Smith
Bruce "Boo" Smith, a halfback from Faribault whose father had played for Minnesota before him, powered the Gophers to back-to-back national championships in 1940 and 1941. He made a specialty of the season-saving play, scoring come-from-behind touchdowns against Nebraska, Ohio State, and Michigan during the unbeaten 1940 campaign, including the score that put Minnesota ahead in a 7-6 defeat of Michigan. As captain of the unbeaten 1941 team he won the Heisman Trophy, the first Minnesota player so honored, receiving the award just two days after Pearl Harbor. Hollywood starred him in "Smith of Minnesota" in 1942 before he left to serve as a Navy fighter pilot in World War II, and he later played for the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams. Smith died of cancer in 1967 at just 47; the College Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 1972, and Minnesota retired his number 54.
