About Leo Nomellini

Leo Nomellini took one of football's unlikeliest paths to greatness: born in Lucca, Italy and raised in Chicago, he never played high school football and first suited up with a Marine Corps team during World War II, serving in the invasions of Saipan and Okinawa. Enrolling at Minnesota afterward, he became a four-year starter at tackle on both sides of the ball, a consensus All-American in 1948 and 1949, and a Big Ten heavyweight wrestling champion besides. The San Francisco 49ers made him the first draft choice in franchise history in 1950, and he repaid them with fourteen seasons and 174 consecutive games, earning all-league honors on offense and defense and reaching ten Pro Bowls. In the offseason he wrestled professionally as 'Leo the Lion.' He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
