About Ed Widseth

Ed Widseth played on one of the most dominant runs of teams college football has seen. In three varsity seasons at tackle for Minnesota, 1934 through 1936, the Gophers went 23-1 and claimed a national championship every year, the lone blemish a 6-0 upset by Northwestern. Widseth earned first-team All-America honors all three seasons, a consensus pick in 1935 and a unanimous one in 1936, when he captained the team, won its most-valuable-player award and placed seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting as a lineman. The New York Giants made him a first-round draft choice, and from 1937 to 1940 he earned All-NFL recognition three straight years and won the 1938 NFL championship. He later coached St. Thomas to consecutive conference titles. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 1954.
