About Biggie Munn

Clarence "Biggie" Munn packed rare speed into a lineman's frame at Minnesota, where he played guard and fullback from 1929 through 1931. A 215-pounder who could run 100 yards in ten seconds flat, he captained the 1931 Gophers, earned consensus All-America honors, and took home the Chicago Tribune Silver Football as the Big Ten's most valuable player. His greater fame came on the sideline. After stops at Albright and Syracuse, Munn became Michigan State's head coach in 1947 and went 54-9-2 over seven seasons, running off unbeaten years in 1951 and 1952, claiming the 1952 national championship, and earning national Coach of the Year honors. He stepped up to athletic director in 1954 and guided Spartan athletics until 1971. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him as a coach in 1959.
