1955 Topps All-American #18 Pudge Heffelfinger

About Pudge Heffelfinger
Pudge Heffelfinger anchored Walter Camp's Yale powerhouses at guard from 1888 through 1891. His 1888 team went undefeated while outscoring opponents 698-0, Yale lost just twice in his four seasons, and when the first All-America teams were chosen he made them three straight years, 1889, 1890, and 1891, hailed as the greatest lineman of his time. On November 12, 1892, the Allegheny Athletic Association paid him $500 to play against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, and the ledger recording that payment made Heffelfinger the first professional football player in history. He never really quit, scrimmaging against Yale varsity players at 49 and appearing in all-star exhibitions into his sixties. A charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, he died three years later.
