About Amos Alonzo Stagg

Amos Alonzo Stagg shaped football itself more than perhaps anyone who ever coached it. An end at Yale, he was named to the very first All-America team in 1889, then made the sideline his life's work. Across 41 years at the University of Chicago beginning in 1892, Stagg won seven conference titles and national championships in 1905 and 1913, and he is credited with pioneering the huddle, the man in motion, the reverse, the Statue of Liberty play, and numbers on players' jerseys. He retired with 314 victories, a record at the time. Chicago was only part of the story: he coached fourteen more seasons at College of the Pacific, spent six assisting his son at Susquehanna, and tutored kickers at Stockton College until age 96. Known as the 'Grand Old Man of Football,' Stagg entered the College Football Hall of Fame's 1951 charter class, honored as both player and coach, and Knute Rockne said it best: 'All football comes from Stagg.'
