About Brud Holland

Jerome 'Brud' Holland broke ground at Cornell as the first African American to play football for the Big Red, and he became one of the finest ends of his day. From 1936 through 1938 he earned All-America honors twice, in 1937 and 1938, while starring in the classroom on his way to graduating with highest honors. Football was only the opening chapter. Holland added a master's degree from Cornell and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, then served as president of Delaware State College and of Hampton Institute across seventeen years. He was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Sweden in 1970, became the first Black director of the New York Stock Exchange in 1972, and later chaired the American Red Cross. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1965, Holland was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985, the capstone of one of the most consequential lives any All-American has led.
