About Larry Kelley

Larry Kelley played end for Yale from 1934 to 1936 and had a flair for the big moment — as a sophomore he beat Princeton with a long touchdown catch, and he scored a touchdown in every one of the six games he played against Harvard and Princeton. Quick with a quip, he was nicknamed 'Laughing Larry' and unanimously elected captain of the 1936 Elis, who went 7-1 behind his 17 catches for 372 yards. That December he won the Heisman Trophy — just the second winner ever, and the first honored after the award took John Heisman's name — outpolling his nearest rival more than four to one. Kelley turned down the Detroit Lions and offers in baseball and film, preferring the classroom: he taught mathematics and history at the Peddie School and Cheshire Academy. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969.
