About Red Grange
Red Grange, the 'Galloping Ghost,' turned Illinois games into national events as a three-time consensus All-American halfback from 1923 to 1925. On the October 1924 afternoon Memorial Stadium was dedicated, he struck Michigan for four touchdowns in the game's first twelve minutes on runs of 95, 67, 56, and 44 yards, then added a fifth score later on. In only 20 games for the Illini, number 77 — a jersey the school retired — piled up 3,362 all-purpose yards and 31 touchdowns. Days after his final college game he signed with the Chicago Bears, drew 36,600 to his Thanksgiving 1925 debut, and set off on a barnstorming tour that pulled professional football into the national spotlight; he returned to the Bears and played into 1934. Grange entered the College Football Hall of Fame in its inaugural 1951 class and the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a charter enshrinee in 1963.
