About Bob Miller

Robert Gerald "Bob" Miller (July 15, 1935 – May 24, 2022) was a left-handed pitcher, born in Berwyn, Illinois, who threw left but batted right. The Detroit Tigers signed him as a "bonus baby" on June 20, 1953 for a reported $60,000, outbidding the Phillies and White Sox, and under the era's bonus rule he had to stay on the big-league roster. He debuted June 25, 1953, just days after signing, as the youngest player in the majors that year — one of only three 17-year-olds in the game. Miller pitched for the Tigers from 1953 through 1956 (this high-number card captures that original Detroit run), lost 1957 to military service, then returned via the minors before brief 1962 stints with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets. On the expansion Mets he was one of two pitchers named Bob Miller, prompting manager Casey Stengel to nickname him "Lefty" to tell him apart from the right-hander. Over 86 big-league games he went 6-8 with a 4.72 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 188⅔ innings.
