1956 Topps #315 Milt Bolling

About Milt Bolling
Milton Joseph Bolling (August 9, 1930 – January 19, 2013) was a right-handed shortstop signed out of Mobile, Alabama, by Boston Red Sox scout George Digby in 1948, reaching the majors in September 1952 after earning a minor-league All-Star nod at Class-B Roanoke. He spent seven big-league seasons (1952–1958) with the Red Sox (1952–1957), Washington Senators (1957), and Detroit Tigers (1958). Bolling won Boston's starting shortstop job in 1953 after the club sold veteran Johnny Lipon, batting .263 with 5 home runs and 28 RBIs in 109 games that year; in 1954 he showed strong range while leading the American League in errors at the position. His career was derailed in spring training on March 23, 1955, when he broke his left elbow, limiting him to just six games that season. Over 400 games he hit .241 with 19 home runs and 94 RBIs; he was never an All-Star and never reached the World Series. In 1958 he was briefly reunited with his younger brother, second baseman Frank Bolling, to form Detroit's keystone combination. After his playing days, Bolling served the Red Sox for decades as a scout and executive assistant, helping sign Tony Conigliaro and George Scott. This card is a Series 4 high number, printed in the scarcer final run of the 1956 Topps set.
