1956 Topps #260 Pee Wee Reese
1956 Topps #260 Pee Wee Reese
Pee Wee Reese, Brooklyn's Hall of Fame captain at shortstop.

About Pee Wee Reese
Harold Peter Henry "Pee Wee" Reese was the Brooklyn Dodgers' Hall of Fame captain at shortstop and the steadying heart of the "Boys of Summer." A Kentucky boy who worked as a phone-company cable splicer, he earned his nickname as a champion marbles player (a "pee wee" is a small marble), and starred for the hometown minor-league Louisville Colonels before Brooklyn purchased his contract in 1939 for $35,000 and four players. Debuting in 1940, Reese played his entire 16-season career (1940-1942 and 1946-1958, after three years of U.S. Navy service in World War II) with the Dodgers, batting .269 with 2,170 hits, 126 home runs, and 885 RBI over 2,166 games. A ten-time All-Star, he named team captain in 1950 and anchored the great Dodgers clubs of the era, finally winning it all in 1955 when Brooklyn beat the Yankees in a seven-game World Series. He is best remembered for his quiet leadership on and off the field: in 1947 he publicly supported teammate Jackie Robinson amid hostile crowds, refusing to sign a petition against Robinson and reportedly putting an arm around him in a lasting gesture of solidarity. Reese was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Dodgers retired his number 1. This is a card from Topps' 1956 third series, where, like all Series 3-4 cards (#181-340), the higher-numbered scarce gray-back stock is the tougher variation for collectors.
