1956 Topps #293 Stu Miller

About Stu Miller
Stuart Leonard "Stu" Miller was a slightly built right-handed pitcher who signed with the St. Louis Cardinals for a $100 bonus after a 1949 tryout camp in his hometown of Northampton, Massachusetts, discovered by scout Joe Cusick and having never played college ball. Armed with a deceptive changeup that hitters likened to a butterfly, he shut out the Cubs in his August 1952 debut and went 6-3 with a 2.05 ERA as a rookie. His 1956 Topps card shows him with St. Louis, where he pitched through early May 1956 before a trade to the Phillies; he later starred with the New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-62), Baltimore Orioles (1963-67) and Atlanta Braves. Over 16 seasons he went 105-103 with a 3.24 ERA, 154 saves and 1,164 strikeouts, leading the NL in ERA in 1958 (2.47) and pacing the AL with 27 saves in 1963. Nicknamed "The Butterfly Man" for that fluttering changeup, he was a 1961 All-Star and the winning pitcher in that year's first All-Star Game at Candlestick Park, where a gust of wind famously caused him to sway and be called for a balk. He was a member of the 1966 World Series champion Orioles.
