About Andy Pafko
Pafko was in his sixth season as a Milwaukee Brave, now a part-time outfielder at 37. He hit .238 in 95 games with 3 home runs and 23 RBI, then went 3 for 9 as the Braves fell to the Yankees in seven games in the World Series. Andy Pafko grew up on a dairy farm in Boyceville, Wisconsin, and reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in September 1943 after winning Pacific Coast League MVP honors at Los Angeles. He starred in Chicago for nearly nine seasons, helping the Cubs to the 1945 pennant and hitting .312 with 26 home runs and 101 RBI in 1948 after a move to third base. His best power year came in 1950, when he hit a career-high 36 homers. Traded to Brooklyn in June 1951, he was the Dodgers' left fielder when Bobby Thomson hit the Shot Heard 'Round the World. He finished with the Milwaukee Braves, the home-state team he joined in 1953, and played on their 1957 World Series champions. Across 17 seasons he hit .285 with 213 home runs and 976 RBI in 1,852 games, played in four World Series with three clubs, and was named to the Cubs All-Century Team in 1999. He later coached for the Braves and managed in the minors.
