About Bob Grim

Card #224 in the 1958 Topps set, from Series Three, shows Bob Grim with the New York Yankees. It reports his 1957, when arm trouble made him a full-time reliever: 12-8 with a 2.62 ERA in 46 games, and 19 saves, later credited as the American League lead. He got the final out of the All-Star Game and took the Game 4 loss in the World Series against Milwaukee.

Bob Grim signed with his hometown Yankees out of a Brooklyn high school in June 1948 and, after two years pitching in the Marines, reached the majors on April 18, 1954. He went 20-6 with a 3.26 ERA that first season, the first Yankee rookie to win 20 games since Russ Ford in 1910, and was voted American League Rookie of the Year. Elbow trouble surfaced in 1955 and shadowed the rest of his eight-year career. Working strictly in relief by 1957, he went 12-8 with a 2.63 ERA and piled up 19 saves, the most in the league by a count assembled years later, since saves were not yet a standard statistic. Named an All-Star that summer, he finished the All-Star Game by retiring pinch-hitter Gil Hodges to left field for a save in the American League's 6-5 win. He pitched in the 1955 and 1957 World Series and was on the 1956 championship roster without getting into a game. The Yankees traded him to Kansas City in June 1958, and he later pitched for Cleveland, Cincinnati and St. Louis in 1960 before spending 1961 in the minors. Kansas City signed him again for a last dozen relief outings in 1962. He finished 61-41 with a 3.61 ERA.
