About Gail Harris

Topps #309 pictures Harris with the Detroit Tigers, who acquired him from the Giants in January with Ozzie Virgil for Jim Finigan and cash. He became the regular first baseman in mid-June and hit .273 with 20 home runs and 83 RBI in 134 games. The card is in the fourth series (#265-352) of the 494-card set.

Gail Harris was a left-handed first baseman from Abingdon, Virginia, who signed with the New York Giants at 18 in 1950 and spent five and a half seasons in their farm system before debuting on June 3, 1955. He started at first for the Giants that year but hit only .232, then lost the job to Bill White. In 1957, the Giants' last season in New York, he was the backup first baseman, and on September 21 he hit the last home run by a New York Giants player, off Red Witt of Pittsburgh. Traded to Detroit in January 1958, he had his best year and hit 20 home runs, taking over as the Tigers' regular first baseman in mid-June. His production dropped in 1959, and after eight games in 1960 he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Sandy Amoros. He finished at Triple-A in 1961. In 437 major league games he hit .240 with 51 home runs. He later worked in insurance sales and lived in Manassas, Virginia; his son Mark became a minor league hitting coach. He died in 2012.
