About Ernie Banks

Ernie Banks broke into professional ball with the Negro American League's Kansas City Monarchs in 1950, served two years in the Army, and in September 1953 became the first Black player to appear in a game for the Chicago Cubs. He spent his entire career, 1953 to 1971, with the Cubs at shortstop and later first base, hitting 512 home runs with 2,583 hits. Banks won back-to-back National League MVP Awards in 1958 and 1959-both as a shortstop-and led the league in home runs in 1958 and 1960 and in RBIs in 1958 and 1959. Beloved as "Mr. Cub," he coined the sunny catchphrase "Let's play two," reportedly on a sweltering afternoon in 1969. Remarkably, Banks holds the major-league record for the most games played without ever reaching the postseason. A first-ballot Hall of Famer in 1977, he remains an enduring symbol of joy for the game.
