1958 Topps #345 Jim Hegan

About Jim Hegan
Jim Hegan was traded from Cleveland to Detroit before the 1958 season, ending his run as the Indians' regular catcher. He caught for the Tigers and then the Phillies that year, appearing in 70 games and hitting .201 with one home run. His 1958 Topps card #345 shows him with the Detroit Tigers, part of the fourth series of the set.
Jim Hegan was a catcher from Lynn, Massachusetts, who signed with Cleveland in 1938 and debuted in 1941. After Coast Guard service in World War II he became the Indians' regular catcher in 1946 and held the job for eleven seasons. A right-handed hitter who batted .228 over 1,666 games, he was valued for his defense and his handling of pitchers. He was a five-time All-Star, caught for the 1948 World Series champions and the 111-win 1954 pennant winners, and caught no-hitters by Don Black, Bob Lemon and Bob Feller. Lemon was his roommate and best friend for 17 years. Cleveland pitchers led the American League in earned run average six times during his run as the everyday catcher. He finished with the Tigers, Phillies, Giants and Cubs, then coached for the Yankees and Tigers for many years. His son Mike Hegan also reached the majors. He was inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame in 1966.
