1958 Topps #344 Bob Porterfield

About Bob Porterfield
Porterfield's 1958 began in Boston, where he pitched only a couple of games before the Pirates purchased him, and he finished the year 4-6 with five saves in relief. His Topps #344 shows him with the Red Sox, printed in the fourth series of the set. He shares that stretch of the set with Orlando Cepeda's rookie card at #343.
Bob Porterfield was a right-handed pitcher from Virginia who reached the majors with the Yankees in 1948 after leading the International League in ERA in the minors. Traded to the Washington Senators in June 1951, he became a workhorse starter. In 1953 he led the American League with 22 wins, 24 complete games and nine shutouts, finished seventh in MVP voting and was named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year. He made the 1954 All-Star team and led the league in complete games that season. His form faded after 1955, and Washington sent him to the Red Sox that November. He later pitched in relief for Pittsburgh and the Cubs, finishing in 1959 with an 87-97 record and a 3.79 ERA. After baseball he worked as a welder for Westinghouse. He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
