About Johnny O'Brien

O'Brien's 1958 was a brief one. He got into 15 games split between Pittsburgh and St. Louis, batting just three times, and threw two innings in one relief outing. His Topps #426 comes from the fifth series of the set and pictures him with the Pirates, between Sammy Esposito and Al Worthington.

Johnny O'Brien was a second baseman and reliever from South Amboy, New Jersey, who played six major league seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Braves between 1953 and 1959. He and his twin brother Eddie were stars at Seattle University, where Johnny became the first player in NCAA history to score 1,000 points in a season and, at 5 feet 9 inches, the shortest All-American. Both chose baseball over the NBA and signed with Pittsburgh, and they became the second set of twins in major league history to play for the same team in the same game. Johnny hit .250 with four home runs in 339 games and also pitched in 25 games, mostly in relief. After baseball he settled in Seattle, served as a King County commissioner from 1962 to 1973, and later became the Kingdome's first operations manager. He died in 2025.
