About Lou Berberet

Berberet opened 1958 with Washington, then was traded to Boston on May 1 for infielder Ken Aspromonte and served as Sammy White's backup, finishing at .208 with 2 homers and 18 RBI in 62 games. His 441-chance errorless streak ended April 17. Topps #383 pictures him with the Red Sox in the fifth series, in a 494-card set that introduced the Sport Magazine All-Star subset.

Lou Berberet was a left-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing catcher from Long Beach, California, who spent seven seasons in the majors between 1954 and 1960 with the Yankees, Senators, Red Sox and Tigers. He signed with the Yankees out of Santa Clara for a reported $21,000 bonus, lost two years to Army service, and was billed in the minors as the next Yogi Berra, but Berra and Elston Howard blocked his path and New York dealt him to Washington in 1956. There he became a starter and a standout defender, playing 1957 without an error and later stringing together 441 straight chances without a miscue. His best power year came with Detroit in 1959, when he hit 13 homers and drove in 44. He retired at 30 with a .230 average, 31 home runs and a .992 fielding percentage, then coached youth baseball in Long Beach, including the 1963 American Legion champions, and later lived in Las Vegas.
