About Bob Skinner / Bill Virdon / Roberto Clemente "Corsair Outfield Trio"

Topps paired three-fifths of an all-time great Pittsburgh outfield on this "Corsair Outfield Trio" card, honoring left fielder Bob Skinner, center fielder Bill Virdon, and right fielder Roberto Clemente. Skinner, originally a first-base prospect, was shifted to left field to make room for slugger Dale Long and developed into a steady run producer for the Pirates through the mid-1960s. Virdon, the 1955 National League Rookie of the Year with the Cardinals before being traded to Pittsburgh, patrolled center field for the Pirates from 1956 to 1965, winning a Gold Glove in 1962 and a World Series ring in 1960. Clemente, in only his fourth full season in 1959, was still years from the superstardom that would bring him a batting title, an MVP award, twelve Gold Gloves, and 3,000 hits over an 18-year Hall of Fame career, all spent with Pittsburgh. Together the trio anchored the Pirates outfield as the franchise built toward its 1960 World Series championship.
