About Harmon Killebrew

Harmon Killebrew signed with the Washington Senators as the franchise's first bonus player and made his major-league debut in 1954 at age 17. He didn't become a regular until the Senators relocated to become the Minnesota Twins in 1961, after which he emerged as one of the game's most feared sluggers, leading the American League in home runs six times through the decade. Nicknamed "Killer" (a play on the first letters of his surname) and "Hammerin' Harmon" for his prodigious tape-measure blasts, Killebrew put together eight 40-home-run seasons, capped by his 1969 MVP campaign when he hit 49 homers with 140 RBIs. A 13-time All-Star, he helped lead the Twins to the 1965 AL pennant and retired with 573 career home runs, fifth all-time when he left the game. Killebrew was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, the first Twin so honored. His 1959 Topps card comes from his Washington Senators years, before the franchise's move and his ascent to superstardom.
