About Ken Boyer

Ken Boyer was a third baseman who starred for the St. Louis Cardinals for 11 of his 15 major league seasons (1955-1969), also playing for the Mets, White Sox, and Dodgers. A superb two-way player, he made 11 All-Star Game selections across seven seasons and won five consecutive Gold Gloves (1958-1961, 1963). His signature year came in 1964, when he batted .295 with 119 RBI (leading the NL) to win the NL MVP award while powering St. Louis to its first pennant in 18 years; in that year's World Series he drove in a team-high six runs, including a decisive Game 4 grand slam, as the Cardinals beat the Yankees in seven games for his only championship. Boyer finished his career with a .287 average, 282 home runs, and 1,141 RBI. The Cardinals retired his No. 14 in 1984 and inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2014, though he has not been elected to Cooperstown. This 1959 Topps card shows him mid-career as St. Louis's All-Star third baseman.
