About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Card 337 in the 1961 Topps set is a combination card called Al's Aces, putting White Sox manager Al Lopez between two of his pitchers, Early Wynn and Herb Score. The title hides a Cleveland reunion: Lopez managed the Indians from 1951 through 1956 and had both men there, then took over the White Sox in 1957, added Wynn for 1958 and landed Score in an April 1960 trade that sent Barry Latman to Cleveland. Wynn had won the 1959 Cy Young Award; Score was still working back from the 1957 line drive that broke his facial bones. Lopez's 1960 club finished 87-67, third in the American League, 10 games behind the Yankees.

Al Lopez managed the 'Go-Go' White Sox to the 1959 pennant and Cleveland to a then-American League record 111 wins in 1954, the only two clubs to break the Yankees' pennant run; the gentlemanly 'El Senor' reached the Hall of Fame in 1977. Herb Score - a hard-throwing Cleveland rookie sensation of the mid-1950s, he set a rookie strikeout record and won 36 games across two dazzling seasons before a line drive to the face in 1957 changed the course of his career. Early Wynn was a hard-nosed 300-game winner who anchored Cleveland's great 1950s rotation and then won the 1959 Cy Young Award pitching the White Sox to the pennant, reaching 300 wins in 1963 before his 1972 Hall of Fame induction.
