1961 Topps #185 Herb Score

About Herb Score
Score's 1961 Topps cards are the first to show him in a Chicago uniform, and the season behind them was a thin one: 22 starts, a 5-10 record, a 3.72 ERA and only 78 strikeouts in 1960, a long way from the arm that once averaged better than a strikeout an inning. Card #185 is his own card in the second series. Card #337, from the fourth series, is Al's Aces, which groups him with Early Wynn and manager Al Lopez, who had managed him in Cleveland and pushed Chicago to trade for him. Both falling in the readily available first 370 cards of the set.
Herbert Jude Score, born June 7, 1933, in Rosedale, a Queens neighborhood of New York City, was a hard-throwing left-hander who signed with the Cleveland Indians on his 19th birthday in 1952 for a $60,000 bonus, after pitching Lake Worth Community High School in Florida to a state championship. He reached the majors on April 15, 1955, and was an instant sensation, going 16-10 with a 2.85 ERA and 245 strikeouts, a major-league rookie record that stood until 1984, and taking American League Rookie of the Year honors. He followed with a 20-9, 2.53 campaign and a league-best 263 strikeouts in 1956, an All-Star in each of his first two seasons. On May 7, 1957, a line drive off the bat of the Yankees' Gil McDougald struck him in the face, breaking facial bones and injuring his right eye. His vision returned, but a torn elbow tendon in 1958 and the altered delivery that followed cost him his velocity. Cleveland traded him to the Chicago White Sox on April 18, 1960, for Barry Latman; his last big-league outing came on May 4, 1962, leaving him 55-46 with a 3.36 ERA and 837 strikeouts. He broadcast Cleveland games from 1964 to 1997 and entered the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame in 2006.
