About Andre Rodgers

Rodgers' 1961 Topps card, #183 in the series-2 run, reports his 1960 season with the Giants: .244 in 81 games, split among 41 at shortstop, 21 at third base, six at first and two in left field. Topps pictures him with the Milwaukee Braves, who had landed him from San Francisco on October 31, 1960, in a straight swap for Alvin Dark. Milwaukee moved him along to the Cubs at the end of the next spring training, so he never played a regular-season game for the Braves.

Kenneth Andre Ian Rodgers was born December 2, 1934, in Nassau, Bahamas, and died there December 13, 2004. A standout cricketer who had never seen a baseball until 1952, he paid his own way to a 1954 New York Giants tryout and landed in their Melbourne, Florida camp under Carl Hubbell. He won the 1955 Northern League batting crown at St. Cloud at .387, then beat out Vada Pinson for the 1958 Pacific Coast League title at Phoenix. Rodgers debuted April 16, 1957, becoming the first Bahamian to play in the integrated major leagues. A 6-foot-3 right-handed shortstop, he played for the New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-1960), Chicago Cubs (1961-1964) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1965-1967), then spent 1969 with Japan's Taiyo Whales. He finished at .249 with 45 home runs and 245 RBIs in 854 games. Back home he ran Rodgers Sports Shop, managed the 1971 national team, and entered the inaugural Bahamas National Sports Hall of Fame class in 1989; Nassau's Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium now carries his name.
