1961 Topps #84 Lee Maye

About Lee Maye
Maye came out of spring training in 1961 with the Milwaukee Braves' left field job, then reinjured his shoulder on opening day and barely played the rest of April. He was back in the lineup in May, shortened his swing, and homered in three straight games in the middle of the month. The season finished at 110 games, a .271 average, a .440 slugging mark, and 14 home runs, the most he ever hit in a year. He wore number 24 in Milwaukee. Card 84 sits near the front of the first series.
Arthur Lee Maye was an outfielder who spent thirteen big-league seasons between 1959 and 1971, most of them with the Milwaukee Braves, followed by the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and raised in Los Angeles, he made the All-City team at Jefferson High School and signed with the Braves out of school in June 1954. He batted left, threw right, and was one of the fastest men in the game, timed under ten seconds in the 100-yard dash and successful on 38 of 44 stolen base attempts from 1960 through 1963. He won the Braves' left field job in 1961 and had his best year in 1964, when he led the National League with 44 doubles and batted .304. Shoulder, knee, and back injuries and a 1962 respiratory illness kept interrupting him. Away from the park he was a working rhythm and blues singer under his full name, leading the Los Angeles doo-wop group Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns and recording as a solo act for decades. He finished at .274 with 94 home runs and 419 runs batted in, and died in Riverside, California, in 2002.
