1961 Topps #145 Bob Buhl

About Bob Buhl
Buhl's 1961 Topps card reports a 1960 season in which he went 16-9 with a 3.09 ERA over a career-high 238.2 innings for Chuck Dressen's second-place Braves, 88-66 and seven games behind Pittsburgh. He was one of three Milwaukee starters to reach 16 wins, alongside Warren Spahn (21-10) and Lew Burdette (19-13). That summer also brought his only All-Star recognition: he was named to both 1960 All-Star Games and pitched in the July 11 contest, where Al Kaline caught him for a two-run homer. Card #145 is a second-series base issue showing him with Milwaukee.
Bob Buhl signed with the Chicago White Sox out of a 1946 tryout camp in his hometown of Saginaw, Michigan, but Commissioner Happy Chandler granted him free agency in February 1948 because the deal came before he had graduated from high school, and he signed with the Boston Braves organization instead. Army paratrooper duty in 1951-52 delayed him further; he debuted on April 17, 1953. Over fifteen seasons he went 166-132 with a 3.55 ERA in 2,587 innings for the Braves (1953-1962), Chicago Cubs (1962-1966) and Philadelphia Phillies (1966-1967). He won 18 games in 1956 and 18 again in 1957, when his .720 winning percentage led the National League and Milwaukee won the only World Series title of its Braves era. He earned the nickname Dodger Killer by beating Brooklyn in five straight starts in 1956. At the plate he was hopeless: no home runs in 857 career at-bats and a .089 average. He settled in Mio, Michigan, coached high school ball at Hillman in the 1970s, and died in Titusville, Florida on February 16, 2001.
