1961 Topps #146 Marty Keough

About Marty Keough
Washington's expansion roster finally handed Keough a regular job. He started 109 of the club's 161 games in 1961 and turned in the busiest year of his career: 135 games, 390 at-bats, and career bests in hits (97), doubles (18), triples (9), home runs (9), runs (57), runs batted in (34), and stolen bases (12), with work at all three outfield spots. He hit .249. His signature swing came June 10, when he went 4-for-7 and ended a 15-inning marathon with a two-out homer over the right-field fence to beat the White Sox, 4-3. Card #146 sits in the second series and is his lone Topps card as a Washington Senator.
Richard Martin Keough, born April 14, 1934 in Oakland, California, was a three-sport star at Pomona High School, taking California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section football player of the year honors in 1951 and sharing the section's baseball player of the year award before the Boston Red Sox signed him for a $100,000 bonus in 1952. He turned into a fast, sure-handed outfielder in the Red Sox farm system, twice leading the American Association in triples for Louisville, and reached the majors on April 21, 1956. Outfield duty behind Ted Williams, Jim Piersall, and Jackie Jensen kept his at-bats scarce in Boston, and a June 1960 trade sent him to Cleveland. Washington took him in the December 1960 expansion draft, and a year later he went to Cincinnati, where he spent four seasons as an outfielder and first baseman. He finished in 1966 with Atlanta and the Cubs, played 1967 in the Pacific Coast League and 1968 in Japan, then scouted for the Padres, Dodgers, and St. Louis Cardinals. A left-handed hitter and thrower, he batted .242 with 434 hits, 43 home runs, and 176 RBIs in 841 games over eleven seasons. He is the father of pitcher Matt Keough and the older brother of outfielder Joe Keough.
