About Dutch Dotterer
Number 332 sits in the fourth series of the 1961 Topps set and carries Dotterer as a Washington Senator, the expansion club having taken him in the December 1960 draft after Kansas City left him unprotected. His rookie card is his 1958 Topps issue. The wrinkle collectors chase is the picture itself: Topps printed the head shot of his younger brother Tom, a Cincinnati farmhand who never reached the majors, above Dutch's name. Washington used him in only seven games and 19 at-bats, and he played his last major league game on April 30, 1961, before being released in May.
Henry John "Dutch" Dotterer Jr. was a right-handed catcher who played parts of five major league seasons, from 1957 through 1961, mostly with the Cincinnati Redlegs/Reds before finishing with the expansion Washington Senators. Born in Syracuse, New York, on November 11, 1930 (some records give 1931), he was the son of a minor-league shortstop who later scouted for Cincinnati, the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. Dotterer starred at Syracuse University before signing with the Cincinnati organization in June 1950, spent 1953 and 1954 in the Navy, and did not reach the majors until September 1957. Over 107 games he batted .247 with five home runs and 33 RBI, a backup catcher prized for his arm, throwing out roughly one of every three runners who tested him. On June 10, 1960 he hit a grand slam off Sandy Koufax that accounted for every Cincinnati run in a 4-3 win, and he twice beat Warren Spahn with extra-inning pinch hits. Cincinnati traded him to Kansas City in October 1960, the Athletics left him unprotected, and Washington took him in that December's expansion draft. He closed out his playing days with the hometown Syracuse Chiefs in 1961-1962 and was enshrined in the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He died in Syracuse in 1999.
