About Gene Woodling

The expansion Washington Senators took Woodling in the December 1960 expansion draft, handing him to manager Mickey Vernon, a friend from his Navy days. At 39 he answered with 107 hits and a .313 average in 110 games, his best mark since 1957 and a rebuke to anyone who thought the Yankees' old left fielder was finished. This card is a third-series 1961 Topps issue picturing him in a Washington uniform. This printing came eighteen years after Woodling had reached the majors with Cleveland, back in 1943.

Gene Woodling was an Akron, Ohio, native who broke into the majors with Cleveland in 1943, lost 1944 and 1945 to Navy service in World War II, and bounced through Cleveland and Pittsburgh before a Minor League Player of the Year season with the San Francisco Seals put him back on the map; manager Lefty O'Doul rebuilt his stance there. As a left-handed-hitting outfielder for the Yankees from 1949 to 1954 he played on five straight World Series champions, batting .318 across those five Series with three home runs, and he led American League outfielders in fielding percentage in 1952 and 1953. He hit a career-best .321 for Cleveland in 1957, then earned his only All-Star selection and Orioles Most Valuable Player honors in 1959 at .300; Baltimore put him in its team Hall of Fame in 1992. Over 17 seasons he hit .284 with 147 home runs and 830 RBI, batting over .300 five times. He later coached first base for Baltimore under Hank Bauer from 1964 through 1967, including the 1966 championship, and scouted for the Yankees and Indians.
