About Pete Daley

The new Washington Senators claimed Daley in the December 1960 expansion draft, and he opened as their starting catcher on April 10, 1961, the day President John F. Kennedy threw out the ceremonial first pitch before a sold-out home crowd. Gene Green soon cut into his playing time, and Daley closed his major-league career at .192 in 72 games with two homers and 17 RBIs. Card 158 is a second-series number.

Pete Daley was a right-handed catcher born January 14, 1930, in Grass Valley, California, a Gold Rush town where both of his grandfathers mined gold underground. Red Sox scout Charlie Wallgren signed him in June 1948, and two years in the Army cost him the 1951 and 1952 seasons. Daley debuted on May 3, 1955, and spent five years in Boston backing up Sammy White. He was a sure-handed receiver: four errors in 1,005 chances over 233 games behind the plate, a .996 fielding mark. His best year with the bat was 1956, when he hit .267 with five home runs, 29 RBIs and 22 runs; three of those homers came off future Hall of Famers Whitey Ford, Early Wynn and Jim Bunning. Boston traded him to the Kansas City Athletics for pitcher Tom Sturdivant on December 3, 1959, and he shared the catching there with Harry Chiti. The new Washington Senators claimed him in the December 1960 expansion draft. Over seven seasons Daley batted .239 with 18 home runs and 120 RBIs in 391 games. He died August 22, 2024, in Marysville, California, at 94.
